Paint

Paint is one of those things that a lot of people don't consider when they think about going green. While paint doesn't hurt the environment too much, it does hurt us, by "off-gassing" harmful chemicals for years and years! Going green with paint means a healthier home, so the idea is that you and everyone else in the home will be healthier, so while the paint won't save you money directly, it just might reduce some healthcare costs and keep you living happier and longer. One positive side effect is that most green paints aren't made with any petroleum products. This means you'll be reducing your dependency on oil and while that in itself might not save you money, this is one of those areas where future generations might just save a bit.

For the most part, we will discuss standard low or zero VOC paints. Other natural alternatives will be discussed at the bottom. While natural alternatives are often useful, most of the time they aren't worth the hassle. Most natural solutions wash or wear off easily which isn't convenient for most applications. New low or zero VOC paints work just as well as traditional paints without the fumes.

Indoor Wall & Ceiling Paint

The Lowdown

Purchase paint that, after tinting, has a VOC rating of 50 g/l or less.
Consider a rating of 5 g/l or less if the price is comparable or if you desire an extra degree of safety.
Make sure that the paint and tint contain little or no acetone, ammonia, or formaldehyde.

The Lowdown

Naturally zero VOC and gives an interestingly different finish than most paints.
Unfortunately, it is slightly corrosive when applying and not very durable.

Clay Paint

The Lowdown

These paints can actually absorb chemicals making them better than zero VOC paints.
Clay paint can't be cleaned without having to re-apply unless you top coat it which eliminates the benefits.
